So I work with this guy named Reese. He is really nice and kind and a great guy all around. He is also black. The other day Josh brought Elise up to the store to show me some stuff that he wanted to christmas. I was holding Elise and she kept wanted to play with Reese and reaching out for him and playing peekaboo and whatnot. She suddenly stopped and pointed to Reese and said " mommy, is a bwown one" ( brown one) both Reese and Jeremy ( also black ) froze with their mouths open. HORRIFIED! I am sooooooo glad she did that to someone who I knew and NOT some random person in public. Everybody was like " your baby is racist!" Reese said " Oh no she isnt! That is silly, she is two years old and she is making a color observation. and I am, in fact brown" lol
I told one of my managers about it today and he was like " you know when you hear this story your first reaction is to be like "what are they teaching this kid?!" then when you think about it you realize nobody is sitting at home going " #$%^ those BROWN people" and this is just an innocent kid making an observation." I thought this was hilarious and thought you all would enjoy it too.
haha, and I'm pretty sure that children that young don't understand the concept of race or see it any differently than eye color or hair color or new clothes. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious and I'm glad they had such good sense of humor about it and realized her innocence.
